AI Journal Policies

Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy

JISA (Jurnal Informatika dan Sains)

1.Introduction and General Principles

JISA (Jurnal Informatika dan Sains) recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies can support researchers in improving the efficiency, clarity, and quality of scholarly communication. These technologies may assist with literature exploration, research idea development, manuscript organization, language refinement, and other tasks related to academic writing and research. However, AI technologies must not replace human expertise, critical thinking, independent judgment, or scholarly responsibility. Their use must be guided by transparency, research integrity, confidentiality, and appropriate human oversight.

Authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible for their respective contributions to the publication process. The use of AI must not compromise the originality, accuracy, reliability, or ethical standards of research published in JISA.

2. Responsible Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies to support manuscript preparation, provided that the tools are used responsibly and do not replace the authors’ intellectual contributions.

Authors are responsible for:

  • Accuracy and verification: Reviewing and verifying all AI-generated content, including factual statements, interpretations, citations, references, and research findings. AI-generated references must be checked against reliable original sources.
  • Originality and intellectual contribution: Ensuring that the submitted manuscript reflects the authors’ own scholarly contributions, analysis, interpretation, and conclusions.
  • Transparency: Disclosing the use of AI tools when they have made substantive contributions to manuscript preparation, in accordance with the disclosure requirements of this policy.
  • Data protection and confidentiality: Ensuring that the use of AI tools does not compromise unpublished research, personal information, confidential materials, intellectual property, or third-party rights.
  • Compliance with tool conditions: Reviewing the privacy policies, terms of service, data retention practices, and permitted uses of AI tools before submitting research materials or unpublished manuscripts.
  • Research integrity: Ensuring that AI tools are not used to fabricate findings, misrepresent evidence, manipulate research results, or produce misleading scholarly content.

Basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks do not ordinarily require a separate AI disclosure. However, substantive AI-assisted rewriting, restructuring, or content development should be disclosed.

3. AI and Authorship

Generative AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JISA. AI tools must not be cited as authors. Authorship is reserved for individuals who can make a genuine intellectual contribution to the research, approve the final manuscript, agree to its submission, and accept responsibility for the integrity of the work.

All listed authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • The manuscript represents original scholarly work and is not improperly duplicated or previously published.
  • All sources and contributions are appropriately acknowledged.
  • The manuscript complies with applicable ethical standards and intellectual property requirements.
  • Any questions concerning the accuracy, originality, or integrity of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
  • The use of AI does not transfer authorship responsibilities or accountability away from the human authors.

4. Use of AI in Figures, Images, and Artwork

The use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies to create or modify figures, images, and artwork must be consistent with research integrity, transparency, and the requirements of JISA.

4.1. Explanatory Images

Explanatory images illustrate concepts, processes, relationships, or theoretical frameworks. Examples include flowcharts, decision trees, conceptual diagrams, timelines, and research workflow illustrations.

Authors may use AI tools to assist in preparing explanatory images, provided that:

  • The images accurately represent the concepts and relationships discussed in the manuscript.
  • The authors verify the scientific and technical accuracy of the images.
  • The use of AI is disclosed in the relevant figure caption and the manuscript's AI declaration, where applicable.
  • The disclosure identifies the AI tool, version where available, and purpose of its use.

Authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, attribution, and appropriate licensing of all submitted images.

4.2. Research Data Visualizations

Research data visualizations include charts, graphs, plots, heatmaps, and other visual representations derived from research datasets.

AI tools may assist in preparing data visualizations only when the resulting visualizations faithfully represent the underlying data and the methods used.  AI tools must not be used to fabricate research results, invent observations, alter underlying datasets deceptively, or create visualizations that misrepresent the findings. Where AI tools contribute to data visualization, authors should describe the relevant tools, versions, developers or providers where applicable, and reproducible analytical procedures in the Methods section. Authors must retain the original data and relevant documentation and provide them for editorial assessment when reasonably requested.

5. Policy for Peer Reviewers

Peer reviewers play an essential role in maintaining the quality and integrity of scholarly publications. Manuscripts submitted to JISA must be treated as confidential documents throughout the peer-review process. Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, unpublished research data, or any portion of confidential review materials to public or otherwise unsuitable AI tools if doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, or personal data. AI tools may be used in a limited supporting capacity, such as improving the language or structure of a review report or assisting with general background literature exploration, provided that:

  • The confidentiality of the manuscript and review process is preserved.
  • The tool is appropriate for handling the information involved.
  • The reviewer independently evaluates all relevant evidence and conclusions.
  • AI-generated content does not replace the reviewer's scientific judgment.
  • Any applicable disclosure requirements are followed.
  • Reviewers remain fully responsible for the accuracy, fairness, independence, and integrity of their review reports.

6. Policy for Editors

Editors of JISA are responsible for maintaining the journal's academic standards, publication ethics, and editorial independence. Manuscripts, reviewer reports, author correspondence, and other materials handled during editorial evaluation must be treated as confidential. Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts or associated materials to AI tools when doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, or personal data.

Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts or associated materials to AI tools when doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, or personal data. AI tools may be used in a limited supporting capacity for tasks such as:

  • Improving the language or structure of editorial correspondence.
  • Supporting general background literature exploration.
  • Assisting with administrative checks of submission completeness.
  • Identifying potential inconsistencies that require human verification.
  • AI tools must not replace the editor's independent assessment of scientific quality, research integrity, suitability for publication, or final editorial decision-making.

Editors remain fully accountable for editorial decisions, communications with authors and reviewers, and the appropriate handling of confidential information. Any AI-assisted editorial activity must preserve fairness, confidentiality, impartiality, and the independence of the editorial process.

7. Final Responsibility and Policy Compliance

The use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies does not diminish the responsibilities of authors, reviewers, or editors. Authors are responsible for their manuscripts and research outputs. Reviewers are responsible for their independent scientific assessments. Editors are responsible for editorial evaluation and publication decisions. All participants in the JISA publication process must uphold the principles of transparency, confidentiality, originality, accountability, and research integrity.

JISA may review and update this policy as AI technologies, research practices, and publication ethics standards evolve. Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to follow the latest version of the policy made available through the journal's official channels.
